Smoking is now no more a personal problem; it is a social affair now. So the moment you find someone who wants to quit this awful habit just motivate him. This decision of quitting smoke takes a lot of will power and mental strain so you should always help supporting that person.
When a person decides to leave smoking, he really goes through a lot of mental stress and a lot of illness. At that moment you should always prove as a motivating factor for him. Give your full moral support to him. Give full respect to his feelings and always assure him that he can achieve his goal of quitting smoke. Always make him think positively and allow him to trust your points so that he should get encouragement.
Encourage him and contribute willpower- Willpower is something that is largely dependent on the person- the source. But effective people could help contribute to the source without having to exhaust themselves. Simple words of encouragement or manners that will help the smoker realize that someone is looking out for him or is constantly behind his back for support will help the smoker deal with his feat a lot easier than when he is alone.
Besides, it would make him feel guilty- which is a good thing for a smoker- to get another stick and forget every struggle that he and his supporter has been through just to help him stay quit of the addiction. Willpower is also very valuable to the smoker since it would keep him guarded from the temptations of his addiction. As we all know, when something is addicted to a certain substance- in his case nicotine which by the way is a very powerful drug- it is understandable that he would find it hard to turn his back from the thing that makes him physically dependent.
Help him understand what to expect- Someone who is hooked to cigarettes, say he is a 30-a-day smoker or 60-a-day smoker, will find quitting a very terrible experience. Because his body is already used to the actions the nicotine does to his body, it is understandable that it would continuously find ways to send the signal that urges someone to smoker. He would begin to feel increasingly uncomfortable unless he would smoke another pack. He would begin to feel distracted or his body and brain would start to feel the need for nicotine. And this is the best time that someone stands beside him to keep the greedy parasite at bay.
Only my advices will not work for your loved one. Always be ready to give him rewards as he attains some achievement in leaving this habit. No matter your rewards are costly or not.
But your feelings and emotions should show you regards for him. Show that you are always with him and you also get affected his awful habit.
